📣 DAD’S TAKEON MIGUEL AMAYA

A backup catcher who missed most of 2025 with injuries gets a spot in Update Series anyway, which tells you everything about the state of Cubs catching depth. Amaya's been bouncing between promise and mediocrity since his 2023 debut, never quite sticking as an everyday option despite four years of organizational investment. The defensive improvements mean something, but the bat remains a question mark.

ABOUT MIGUEL AMAYA

Catcher Miguel Amaya was signed by the Chicago Cubs out of Panama on July 17, 2015. He was selected to play in the 2018 Futures Game for the World Team, and was named to the roster of the National League team for the 2019 Futures Game. It took him another four seasons to make his major league debut for the Cubs, which came on May 4, 2023. In 2024, he became the Cubs' regular catcher, playing 117 games and batting .232 with 8 homers and 47 RBIs. Amaya couldn't stay on the field in 2025, with an oblique strain and a sprained ankle limiting him to only 28 regular-season games, though he batted .281 with an .814 OPS, four home runs and 25 RBI.

The 2026 Topps Update Series card captures Amaya during his fourth major league season. In 254 plate appearances, Amaya slashed .236/.340/.377 with a wRC+ of 106. Amaya graded out as an above-average defensive catcher in 2026, and he made notable strides in his ability to throw runners out.
