A 2021 Donruss Optic base card commemorating a season Smith never actually played in is the kind of cruel irony that only football cards can deliver. The tight end spent his entire Vikings tenure dodging injuries and depth charts, and this particular cardboard immortalizes exactly zero catches. At least the finish is pretty.
ABOUT IRV SMITH JR.
Irv Smith Jr. played college football for the Alabama Crimson Tide and was selected in the second round of the 2019 NFL draft by the Minnesota Vikings, going 50th overall. The New Orleans native won a CFP national championship in 2017 and earned Second-team All-SEC honors in 2018. He pulled in 44 passes for 710 yards and seven touchdowns in 2018 before declaring for the draft.
He missed the entire 2021 season after suffering a meniscus injury in a preseason game, making this base card from 2021 Donruss Optic a snapshot of what could have been. Smith's time with the Vikings ended after three seasons, and just 37 career games. The club traded for T.J. Hockenson in November 2022, spelling the beginning of the end to Smith's career in purple.
