Dad’s Take on Kevin Alvarez

Look at this kid trying to look all serious with his batting stance – weighs 180 pounds soaking wet and thinks he's gonna intimidate pitchers! And what's with that baby face? I've seen more intimidating looks on my nephew's little league team. At least he's got the Astros uniform going for him, but this kid looks like he should be asking for my autograph, not the other way around!

KEVIN ALVAREZ Born: 1-18-03 Ht: 6-0 Wt: 180 Bats: L Throws: L Pos: LF, RF, CF SCOUTING REPORT: Alvarez was signed as an international signing class. MLB Pipeline's Scouting Report on Alvarez: A switch-hitting outfielder with plus speed, Alvarez projects as a fourth outfielder at the Major League level. He has a compact swing from both sides of the plate and shows the ability to make consistent contact. His speed gives him range in the outfield and he projects as an average defender at all three outfield spots. While he doesn't have much power, Alvarez has the tools to be a useful bench player who can contribute in multiple areas. ROOKIE STATUS: This is Alvarez's first Bowman Chrome card. He came to the United States in 2021 after being signed as an international free agent in 2020. His best tool is his speed, which should help him advance through the minor league system. Alvarez spent most of 2024 in High-A and showed improvement with his plate discipline. He struck out in 18.1% of his plate appearances, down from 23.5% the previous season. The 21-year-old has yet to reach Double-A but could make that jump in 2025 if he continues to develop. SKILLS: Consistent contact, plus speed, Average defense at all three outfield spots, Switch-hitting ability. WEAKNESSES: Limited power, Needs to continue developing plate discipline. ROOKIE STATUS: This is Alvarez's first Bowman Chrome card. REGULAR SEASON PERFORMANCE (CAREER): .268 BA, 2 HR, 45 RBI in 89 games across three minor league levels. POSTSEASON: Has not yet reached the Major Leagues. AWARDS: None. MLB PIPELINE RANKING: Not currently ranked among Houston's top 30 prospects. FUTURE OUTLOOK: Projects as a fourth outfielder with his speed and defensive versatility being his calling cards. His ability to switch-hit and play all three outfield positions should give him opportunities to reach the Major Leagues, though he'll need to continue improving his plate discipline and develop more power to have sustained success. The Astros like his makeup and work ethic, and he's considered a high-character player who could be a valuable bench piece. His speed gives him the potential to be a pinch-runner and late-inning defensive replacement. INTERNATIONAL SIGNING: Signed as an international free agent out of Venezuela in 2020.
