ABOUT MR. SMILES
So Mr. Smiles is actually Will Benson, and you gotta love this guy's story with Elly de La Cruz when they both broke into the majors in 2023. These two Reds rookies hit their first big league homers in the same game, with Benson's being a walk-off no less, and then they did it again with their second homers just under two weeks later. That kind of synchronized power display made them just the third pair of teammates ever to pull that off. Since he doesn't have traditional rookie cards, you're looking at his first year stuff from 2023, and anything with both him and Elly together is going to have extra appeal to Reds collectors.
Elly de La Cruz and Will Benson formed an immediate bond as 2023 rookies. On June 7 of that year (Elly's second career start) they both hit their maiden MLB homers in the same game, with Benson's a walk-off shot. The connection strengthened 13 days later when they became the third set of teammates to hit their first and second blasts on the same days.
