ABOUT NICK VAN EXEL
Nick Van Exel is one of those second round steals that made the Lakers look brilliant in 1993. This guy came in and immediately took over the starting point guard spot, then dropped 23 points and 8 assists in his very first game against Phoenix, the best Lakers debut since Magic put up 26. He had that fearless scoring mentality and range that was ahead of his time, plus he wasn't afraid to talk trash and back it up. Collectors love his early Lakers stuff because he was such a key part of that mid-90s era before Kobe and Shaq took over, and his cards are still pretty affordable compared to first rounders from that class. Look for his second year cards and any inserts with the purple and gold, those tend to hold value better than his later team issues.
A second-round selection in 1993, Van Exel quickly ascended into the LA height chart and earned the starting gig for the season opener. He proved the part in the contest, posting 23 points and eight assists in a 115-108 win over Phoenix to log the team's highest-scoring debut since Magic Johnson laid it 26 in 1979.
