The Gophers posted a 6-7 record in 2023, rebounding to 8-5 in 2024 and another 8-5 mark in 2025 with a Rate Bowl win over New Mexico. Defensive end Anthony Smith's career season in 2025 with 38 tackles, 17.5 tackles for loss and 12.5 sacks positioned him as a draft prospect whose cards carry heightened collector value. Rush end Karter Menz broke out in 2025 with 32 tackles, nine tackles for loss, and 6.5 sacks, making him another emerging name in the card market after limited playing time prior to last season.
Where they stand: The 2026 season has not yet begun, with Minnesota at 0-0 as the team prepares for P.J. Fleck's tenth year as head coach. The Gophers retained All-Big Ten defensive end Anthony Smith for his senior season, one of the best pass rushers in the Big Ten, while all three top pass rushers from 2025—Smith, Jaxon Howard, and Menz—are expected to return. The team added transfer help on both sides of the ball during the offseason portal period.
