About Carl Eller

Carl Eller was one of those dominant defensive ends who made quarterbacks' lives miserable, especially during his time anchoring that legendary Vikings defense. The guy had everything you want in a pass rusher, size, speed, and the kind of durability that let him terrorize offenses for years, including 15 playoff appearances. He was so good that when he finally got his Hall of Fame call in 2004, it felt long overdue, and they even put him on the All-Decade team for the 1970s. Since he doesn't have rookie cards, collectors usually focus on his early career issues and anything from those dominant Vikings years. Look for his higher grade examples and any numbered parallels, since Hall of Famers without rookies tend to have strong demand across their entire card timeline.

Eller's legacy in Minnesota is simple. As Bud Grant can put it, 'Carl was above the rest,' the former Vikings head coach said of the Hall of Fame defensive end. 'He had size, he had strength, speed and durability. He played his very best against the most players.' It's all that needs to be said. Inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2004. Named to the Pro Football Hall of Fame's All-Decade Team for the 1970s. Played 15 playoff games in his career.

Dad’s Take on Carl Eller

Look at this guy posing like he's about to ask someone to prom instead of rushing the quarterback! Sure, Bud Grant says he was "above the rest," but from this card he looks like he'd rather be modeling those snug purple pants than getting his uniform dirty. Back in my day, defensive ends looked mean and ready to bite someone's head off, not like they just stepped out of a Vikings fashion catalog!
