The Monarchs are gone but not forgotten, and neither are their cards. We’ve got Ticha Penicheiro, Yolanda Griffith, and the rest of the Sacramento legends in Prizm and Select, because someone’s gotta keep the torch lit. The binder keeps growing every time I crack vintage WNBA product, so check back when you’re feeling nostalgic.
The Sacramento Monarchs folded in November 2009 after their ownership, the Maloof family, withdrew support to focus on the Sacramento Kings. The franchise does not currently exist in the WNBA and has not played since the 2009 season, when they finished 12-22 and missed the playoffs for the first time in seven years. Since the team has been defunct for nearly 17 years, there is no active card market movement tied to current roster changes, trades, or performance.
Where they stand: The Monarchs have not competed since 2009. No current season exists. While there have been ongoing campaigns and discussions about bringing WNBA basketball back to Sacramento, no active franchise operates under the Monarchs name as of August 2026.
