📣 DAD’S TAKEON MICK ABEL
Five years from prep prospect to traded pitcher tells you everything about prospect development timelines. The 2020 Bowman Chrome might have seemed like a safe first-year pick, but Abel spent four years grinding through the minors before finally cracking the majors in 2025. At least collectors got some refractor variety to chase in 2025, though by then the shine had worn off considerably. Nothing says patience like watching a first-rounder bounce between levels.
ABOUT MICK ABEL
Right-hander Mick Abel was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the first round with the 15th overall pick of the 2020 MLB draft, becoming the first high school pitcher to be selected, in a draft in which the early picks were dominated by college players. Abel signed with the Phillies for a $4.075 million bonus after a decorated career at Jesuit High School in Oregon, where he was a two-time Gatorade Oregon Baseball Player of the Year and led Jesuit High School to a state championship in 2019, going 10-0 with a 1.26 ERA and 111 strikeouts in 72.1 innings. In his major league debut for the Phillies on May 18, 2025, he started against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Citizens Bank Park and did not give up a run in six innings, gaining credit for a 1-0 win, with his nine strikeouts tying Curt Simmons for most in a debut in franchise history. He made 5 starts for the Phils and was at 2-2, 5.04 with 21 strikeouts in 25 innings when on July 30th he was traded to the Minnesota Twins.
This collection spans Abel's journey from first Bowman Chrome appearance in 2020 through his 2026 Update Series card. The 2020 Bowman Chrome base showcases him as a freshly drafted prep arm, while the 2025 Bowman Chrome trio (base, Refractor, and Purple Refractor) arrived during his Triple-A seasoning and eventual debut year. The 2026 Update Series captures his brief tenure with Philadelphia before the trade that sent him to Minnesota.
