SMU made a seamless jump from the AAC to the ACC, winning the 2023 AAC title at 11-3 before going undefeated in ACC play in 2024 (8-0 conference record, 11-3 overall) and reaching the ACC Championship Game in their debut season, though they fell to Clemson on a last-second field goal and then lost to Penn State 38-10 in the College Football Playoff first round. The quarterback transition from Preston Stone to Kevin Jennings midway through 2024 reshaped the depth chart, with Jennings taking over as starter after Week 3 and Stone ultimately transferring to Northwestern, making Jennings cards the focal point for collectors as the program's established starter heading forward. The 2025 season saw some regression as the Mustangs finished 9-4 and won the Holiday Bowl over Arizona, settling into their second year in the ACC.
Where they stand: The Mustangs are in the preseason phase for 2026, preparing for their third season in the ACC under fifth-year head coach Rhett Lashlee. The team opens its 2026 campaign on September 7 at Florida State before hosting UC Davis on September 12. With Kevin Jennings returning as the established quarterback after Preston Stone's transfer, SMU looks to build on back-to-back winning seasons in their new conference home.
