Look at this guy posing like he's auditioning for a motivational poster in 1981. Number 20 running around in that glorified practice jersey – you can barely tell what team he's on! And of course he had a big game against the Cowboys, everyone thinks beating Dallas makes them a legend. Kid's got decent penmanship on that autograph though, I'll give him that.
ABOUT BILLY SIMS
Billy Sims was an absolute electric running back for the Lions in the early 80s, the kind of guy who could break off a huge play at any moment. He won the Heisman at Oklahoma before Detroit made him the first overall pick in 1980, so he came in with massive expectations and actually delivered. The guy could do it all, rushing and catching out of the backfield, like that monster 81-yard touchdown reception he had against Dallas in '81. Unfortunately his career got cut short by a knee injury after just five seasons, which makes his cards from that era pretty interesting to collectors since there's a limited window of material. Look for his second-year cards since he doesn't have true rookies, and anything with good centering commands a premium because quality control was rough back then.
Sims tallied both rushing and receiving touchdowns during the Lions' tight 27-24 win over the Cowboys in Week 11 of 1981. His first score was a 3-yard tote in the second quarter. He struck again in the final frame, snagging a pass and racing 81 yards all the way to the house.
